What size rug should go under a queen bed?

Use an 8×10 rug under a queen bed. It leaves at least 8.25 inches visible per side across RoomDone’s nine checked queen frames.

Use an 8×10 ft rug under a queen bed. In RoomDone’s catalog, checked through August 24, 2026, that size leaves at least 8.25 inches visible on each side across all 9 queen frames. 9 of the 10 checked rugs use it.

A side margin is the strip of rug visible from the edge of a centered bed frame to the edge of the rug. I used the frame, not the mattress, because upholstery and wide rails are what cover the rug. The frame widths in this table come from the published dimensions in RoomDone’s checked product catalog.

Why is an 8×10 rug the default for a queen bed?

9 of 10 rugs in the catalog were 8×10 ft on August 24, 2026. Centered under the 9 queen frames, they show 8.25 inches to 17.5 inches on each side. That range includes ordinary platform frames and the widest upholstered frame RoomDone currently checks.

The long edge matters too. With the rug starting at the head of the frame, the checked beds leave 16.5 inches to 39.5 inches of rug beyond the foot. You can pull the rug toward the foot if you want less beneath the headboard. The side measurement stays the same.

Rug sizeCatalog rugsVisible per sidePast the foot
8×10 ft98.25 inches to 17.5 inches16.5 inches to 39.5 inches
7×10 ft12.25 inches to 11.5 inches16.5 inches to 39.5 inches

Measurements use a centered rug with its 8 ft edge across the bed. Bedside margin is calculated as rug width minus frame width, divided equally between both sides.

How much rug shows beside each queen frame?

The 9 frames checked through August 24, 2026 span 61 inches to 79.5 inches in width. The narrowest frame gets the most visible rug. The widest upholstered frame gets the least, which is the useful stress test for the recommendation.

This is why mattress width is not enough. A queen mattress is narrower than every frame in the table. The queen-bed fit guide uses the same outside dimensions to check the wall; here they decide what remains visible on the floor.

Can a 7×10 rug work under a queen bed?

The catalog has 1 7×10 ft rug, checked on August 24, 2026. It leaves 2.25 inches to 11.5 inches per side across the same frames. On several conventional frames that is a visible border. On the widest frame it is only 2.25 inches.

I would use the smaller rug when the exact frame is narrow and the room needs the saved floor width for a door, dresser, or walking path. Measure the frame at its widest point first. If you have not chosen the bed yet, the larger rug is the safer buy because it survives more frame choices.

Price does not settle the size question. The checked rugs vary by material, pile, washability, and retailer, but their footprints collapse to only 2 choices. Pick the footprint from the bed and room measurements first. Then compare construction and price among the rugs that passed that fit check.

Which direction should the rug run?

Run the 8 ft edge across the bed and the 10 ft edge toward the foot. That is the orientation behind every figure above, checked against all 9 frames on August 24, 2026.

Put the top edge at the head of the frame if you want the nightstands on the rug. Pull it down if you want bare floor beneath them and more rug at the foot. Before ordering, mark the corners with painter’s tape and open the closet and room doors. The bedroom furniture checklist shows what else must share that floor.

Common questions

Is an 8×10 rug big enough for a queen bed?

Yes. Across RoomDone’s 9 checked queen frames, an 8×10 ft rug leaves 8.25 inches to 17.5 inches visible on each side when centered. It also extends 16.5 inches to 39.5 inches past the foot if its top edge starts at the head of the frame.

Can you use a 7×10 rug under a queen bed?

Yes, but it is a tighter fit. A 7×10 ft rug leaves 2.25 inches to 11.5 inches per side across the same 9 frames. RoomDone would use it only after checking the exact frame width and the room’s walking paths.

Which way should an 8×10 rug go under a queen bed?

Put the 8 ft edge across the bed and the 10 ft edge from head to foot. That orientation creates the side margin this guide measures. Turning it sideways makes the rug wider but too short beneath most checked frames.

Should a rug go under the nightstands?

It can, but it does not have to. This guide measures the rug with its top edge at the head of the bed, which puts the frame on the rug and may include the nightstands. Pulling the rug down changes the foot extension, not the side margin.

One photo is not a tape measure

A photo can show where the bed and doors sit. It cannot confirm the frame width or the open floor around it. RoomDone uses published product dimensions, then asks you to confirm the room before ordering.

Measure the frame. Tape the rug corners.
