How much space do you need behind a desk?

Rear clearance is the floor left over once the desk’s published depth is subtracted from the room, and RoomDone measures it across the shorter side. The number is 36″. It covers the chair pushed back far enough to stand, and enough floor to get past the chair without turning sideways.

The home-office program carries two other clearance numbers and both are smaller. Shelving reserves 30″ in front of its published depth, because you stand there instead of sitting. Anything against a wall gives up 2″ at each end of the wall it uses.

Take the desk’s published depth and add 36″. That total is the shorter side of the room the desk is asking for.

Turn the desk. It changes nothing in the arithmetic, because the rule reads the room’s shorter side whichever wall the desk faces. What changes the answer is a genuinely deeper room.
